Thanks JR. I like the way you putted the results into cross-table. All pictures are fantastic. My pictures are OK but too realistic and unfortunately people may get a right  impression.

But photography shouldn't follow exactly an original image  and can do something more

You right, Billy !

Here is a part of my fine game (fine to me, not Gene! ) with Gene Lindsay from the first round where he had me in lost.

Ending is an extremely important part of game and most of wins / draws / losses between masters come from endings. In this game I was lucky to survive by Pawne man down draw.

A. Moiseyev vs G. Lindsay
TN GAYP Open 2007,
Rd.1, G1

Continue from diagram #1:

27-24 (A), 20-27, 31-15, 17-14 (B), 28-24, 14-18, 15-10, 18-15, 10-6, 22-26, 29-25 (C), 26-30, 25-21, 30-26, 21-17 (D), 26-22, 13-17, 22-18, 13-9, 18-23* (E), 6-2, 23-19, 24-20, 15-11, 9-5, 19-15, 5-1, 15-10 (F) Draw

#1. White to move .................... #2. White to move
Image ... Image
27-32* ....................................... 6-2* WW, 29-25? Draw

A). Even though this move still win, but it creates some problems for white as happened in the game. Instead 27-32! with following 31-27 should be much easy and don't leave red any chances.

B) Now red tries to get into one of famous man down draws: in single corner (Pawne draw) or double corner.

C). Missing a win ! See diagram #2 before 29-25. It is important here for white to prevent a future join red Kings in the single corner. This can be done by placing as soon as possible white King on 10. 29-25 is an important wasting time, allowing red to crown a King with tempo and come back.

Instead 29-25, white should play 24-20, 15-11, 6-2, 26-30, 2-6, 30-26, 6-10 etc. WW

D) Too late! If white tries now to crown King and come back to 10 (see note C), he will be very disappointed with the following scenario:

24-20, 15-11, 6-2, 26-23, 2-6, 23-18, 6-10, 18-22, 10-14 22-17* and now if white plays 14-18, red replies 17-13* and then reid 13-9-6-2 to join with other King in another part of board. If, instead 14-18, white plays 14-10 (or 14-9), red plays back 17-22 with following 22-26-23-19 etc.

Good thing to know.

E) Now it is red turn to play accurately! 18-14 wastes time and loses at this point.

F) Very instructive ending. This game gave me a good jump start  in the tournament, and the only other 2 draws which I had in this ty were draw with Mr. Buy and second game with Michael Holmes which we didn't play

Any comments, folks ?

Sincerely,

Alex

Boring for me, and I don't remember the last game I've played of GAYP.

on a side note -- glhf to everyone attending the tourney. Hopefully a good turnout.

Internet game in TN GAYP 2007.

Post by Alex_Moiseyev »

Here is another boring  game from TN GAYP 2007. My opponent was young but very potential player from "Internet generation". It was his only 2nd (?) GAYP tournament, but he bought Sixth with good discount, and I hope this may change his life and turn it into right directions !

A. Moiseyev vs J. Bailey

9-14 (A), 22-18, 5-9, 18-15 (B, B1), 11-18, 21-17, 14-21, 23-5, 8-11, 25-22, 11-15 (C), 22-17, 15-18 (D), 17-13 (E), 4-8, 24-19, 7-11, 19-16 (F), 11-20, 27-24, 20-27, 32-7, 3-10 (G), 26-23, 8-11, 28-24, 11-15, 24-20, 10-14, 31-26, 15-18, 23-19, 18-22, 26-10, 6-24 (H), 30-26, 24-27, 26-23, 27-31, 23-19, 2-6 (I), 20-16, 31-27, 16-11, 27-24, 11-7, 24-15, 7-2, 15-18, 2-9, 12-16 (J), 9-14, 18-9, 13-6, 1-10, 5-1, 10-15, Red Wins

#1. Red to move ...................... #2. White to move
Image ... Image

A) I played this move in almost all my games in this tournament. Experiment was successful

B) This weak move is quite popular in Internet games, because it is not well covered in Lee's Guide and many players beleive that they open a virgin territory ! Unfortunately nothing new under sun, and all these innovations were discovered more than 100 years ago !

B1) Richard Hallett played this on me in 1999 GAYP US NT having game down and one game to go. We started it 5 minutes before official round time was over. After 5 minutes, when he trade two for two, follow the rules, we started to play move per minute the whole game !

Unfortunately this game were not recorded. All players stayed here and watched our blitz because this game had a huge influence of the final outcome and more likely should identify the Champion.

I remember only that I came to square 22 (with red) and sacrificed a piece, but later took it back ... and one more  At the end I had a winning ending 4 vs 3 where he hold my man on 4. It may take another 100 moves to win this position and I called a draw, which should award me with winning round and 4 points. He declined my offer !

After then I called referee and said that I am going to call "40 moves rule"   Only after this radical action he resigned !

C) This move seems to be logical allowing red to take control of central squares. However, KingsRow opening book recommends here a curious (to me) 4-8 as best giving red a medium level advantage.

D) See diagram #1. Of course red can't play here 6-9? due to winning shot: 30-25* 21-30, 17-13, 30-23, 13-6 etc WW.

Several times I played in position on diagram #1 3-8 with following 8-11, 4-8 - building a trading columns and raising a pressure on red position. However 15-18 seems to be the best because this earlier intervention into white territory limit the freedom of white pieces.

E) 24-19 would be easy here. Placing man on board 17-13 is seriously weakening white position.

F). This trade maybe already loses the game. Instead, 28-24 could survive narrowly. Continue:

28-24, 11-16, 26-23, 18-22, 24-20, 8-11, 30-26*, 2-7 (or 22-25, 29-22, 21-25, 22-18, and then 19-15 & 18-15 with draw) 26-17, 10-14, 17-10, 6-24, 13-9, 16-19, 23-16, 12-19, 9-6*, 1-10, 5-1 etc Draw

G) See diagram #2 after trade. Red occupy center squares and fully control the whole board. This position appears to me as 100% loss on any strategic consideration.

H) Grandmaster would resign here.

I) Master would resign here.

J) When he didn't resign here and played 9-14, I was scared for second wondering if I missed something?

==================================================================

Jay, any my humoristic comments should be treated as such

Sincerely,

Alex

Alex
4-8 is also covered in Kear's Guide, Opening 36, Variant 64. There is nothing wrong with 11-15 though - a small difference in points in a computer generated opening book is not something I would give much consideration.

Message for Mr. Alex

Post by Alan Millhone »

Hello Mr. Alex:

Anything you post on games played and your annotations are never boring. I appreciate the time you take to make the posting , the diagrams used, and your comments. I take the time to read all your postings and to later set up the games and run thru them. I have little time to study, but when I do study I want to look over the games of the Masters and Grand Masters.

" Knowledge is Power " in anything and the wonderful game of Checkers is no exception.

A) I expected the normal 26-22. See Diagram.

26-22 13. 14-17 21x14 14. 10x26 31x22 15. 7-10 {B} 22-18 16. 3-8 30-25 17. 8-11 25-22 18. 6-9 13x6 19. 2x9 32-28 20. 9-13 28-24 21. 11-15 18x11 22. 10-14 11-7 23. 14-17 22-18 24. 17-22 7-2 25. 22-26 2-7 26. 26-30 7-11 27. 13-17 18-14 28. 17-22 14-9 29. 22-25 9-6 30. 25-29 6-2 31. 29-25 2-6 32. 25-22 11-15 33. 22-17 2003 National Tournament, Jim Morrison vs. Richard Hallett and by many others before them.

B) And until now I did not know about the easier 6-9. Here are some variations on it.
