Inishowen Festival of Draughts 2007.
by P.J. Furey
Oh! Come all you draughts players,
Please do not delay
Make haste to Buncrana,
The All-Ireland to play.
O'er the end of October
You can show off your skill,
At that beautiful venue,
The Gateway Hotel.
Many players are now coming,
From Limerick and Clare,
From Dublin and Carlow,
Meath, Louth and Kildare.
Ron King from Barbados,
Will be there for a cert,
So too will Hugh Devlin,
The Letterkenny expert.
They'll be over from Scotland,
And the fair Isle of Wight,
With Tyrone and Derry,
To show us their might.
From Russia comes Champion,
The brave Moiseyev,
We admire his great talents,
And the exhibitions he gave.
The great Con McCarrick
Will be there in fine style,
And Dublin's proud master,
The famed Paddy Doyle.
And other great players
Will be there to a man,
From England and Wales,
And Turkmenistan.
Sure Amangul Durdyeva,
A lassie of note,
Takes on Patricia Breen,
Whom she hopes to demote.
But we all back our colleen,
We trust her the while,
A great World Champion,
She's the pride of our Isle.
Now we all wish and hope
This Tourney will gain
International publicity
Right now and again.
So when you are sporting,
And feeling so well,
Make haste to Buncrana,
And the Gateway Hotel.

Woow what a man, what a legend of Irish Draughts is P.J.
MOST OF ALL WE WISH TO SEE "MYSELF" HERE IN OCT.
With his famous rendition of the "Dangerous Dan McGrew".

Great and wonderful stuff !!! Many thanks to P.J. and Liam who shared this with us. I wish his poem would be included and added to the Festival booklet, but ... it's never late
Thanks again.
Alex

THE MATCH THAT NEVER WAS!!.
Everything was put in place just like a wedding day.
And everyone prepared the room salt, pepper the tables laid
The two main con-celebrants were ready for the day
But history was made because the Match was never played.
You may wonder why this was the case, as many others do.
But for all the computers and mobile phones no one has a clue.
You see you can take the horse to the water but you cannot make him drink.
And that is why it was never played im beginning myself to think.
But maybe there s a reason that ll make a bita sense.
Maybe something important just happened to come up?.
Sure what is more important than a big World Title match
Unless the Barbados Tourist board were a wee bit strapped for cash.!!
That might be the answer but, sure will we ever know.
When Alex and Alan were all packed n Victoria was ready to go.
A holiday of a lifetime, to the sunny Caribbean and
Stories on the front-porch step to tell yer wee gran-waines.
About all them golden hula-dancers in lovely short grass skirts
And buskers on street corners and the sweetest rum to sip.
And them exotic beaches white sand beneath you feet.
Swaying palm trees and calypso, and that soulful reggae beat.
We re all so disappointed we never got to go
And Ron the "King" of Barbados didnt even show
Just another hiccup along lifes stoney way
But we ll live to fight another day, for sure someone will have to pay
But ill taste the beer and see the sights of Paradise you know
When I go to sleep tonite its to ……..Barbados I will go
Ill need no trains nor boats nor planes to get me thru blue skies
But the Match that “never was” you know nearly made me cry.
