Re: ACF ratings
Alex,
I usually request ratings update right before Nationals because of the seeding procedures used to minimize sandbagging.
I'm not the foremost expert on ratings calculations, but I believe ACF ratings are based on running average of last 132 tournament games. So a surprise increase in rating might be due to some "bad games" scrolling off the front end of your 132-game list?
Also, the ratings do not include recent Texas/District 8 or Southern. Patrick Parker has kindly stepped up to assist with this process and forwarded me the Texas results yesterday (with Southern coming soon), so those events should be in the next update.
Yes, deceased players are typically removed from list. Dave must have forgotten to take Lowder off. Thanks for pointing out.

Re: ACF ratings
yes, Alex, its very sad indeed
I have been pushing to use the ELO system, which I believe is what the WCDF ratings uses - although in reality, the only true solution to the ratings is to have more tournaments/more games
as I mentioned on these forums before, the average player only gets 2-3 tournaments per year, which even if you include Nationals, that is only around 30-40 rounds per year - and as long as ratings are done by "round" 30-40 games added to the average player's rating per year will take forever to show any significant increase in skill level
You see this problem the most in younger players who improve very quickly. If their first tournament ever ends in a bad result, they get a bad rating, but say they improve to master status in the next 2 years... it would take 4-5 years of average attendance to tournaments for their rating to reflect this...
but unfortunately, we can not just magically have more tournaments, but I for one certainly appreciate Patrick and Dr. Beckwith for stepping up and helping out with the ratings

Re: ACF ratings
I am wondering: if we don't post anything in the forum regards ACF ratings - rating will not be updated ? If My assumption is correct - I just brought back this topic.
In the past we had ACF rating list published officially in ACF Bulletin every two years. Today it's published only electronically (I can't remember this list in Bulletin in the past 4 years), and also on demand
Sincerely,
Alex

Re: ACF ratings
I'm hoping to have ACF ratings update soon (or at least an estimate of when Dave will have them ready), if not this week. Much of the delay rests with me (trying to do too many administrative things while competing at national and WQT). Kudos to Patrick Parker for his scoresheet help, or this process would be going almost nowhere.
I also understand the WCDF ratings have been drafted and should be ready soon.
Yes, ratings used to be published in ACF bulletin at end of the year. I suppose this could still be done, but a couple pages of other info would have to be stripped to make room (or else there will be extra expense to include additional pages).

Re: ACF ratings
maybe we could do a top 25 ratings list?since
anymore than that would be so costly

Lists
Or top 32 (instead of the suggested top 25) since I am 32 right now!
It should be easy enough to put 1000 or less names on just two (four if you count the back sides) pages. The print would be smaller than usual yet still readable.
p.s. I am currently in Midland, MI taking a college class over the weekend. Are there any checker players near here?

Re: ACF ratings
Karl Albrecht is close (Bay City), but last I heard, his health was not good.
Doug Hughson is nearer Detroit, but I haven't heard anything from him in a few years.

Re: ACF ratings
Merry christmas to everyone
I have been a bit scarce lately , but I see that the feuding is still going well concerning the ratings.
Unfortunately I put all my books and manuscripts into a big big box the other day and I do not know when they will come out again .
Having the chance to put even 1 hours practice a day is a great privelidge ( It used to be 8 or 9for me when I was a kid)
and having the chance to play at least 1 ty; per year is also.Unfortunately I have none.
There is now a system where before there was nothing and a bit like the universe this needs structuring ; so lets give these courageous guys some encouragementand time instead of wining like skinned pigs about who is nbr. 33 and who is nbr. 17.
I hope that the day I reopen my books that this problem will be solved as it is confusing the players as to the real aim of the game ; playing with professionalism , sportsmanship , and perhaps enthusiasm
To you all I wish a happy new year ; and to anyone who wants my rating they can gladly have it
