Greetings all,
I am looking for a MODERN definintion for the word "CHECKERIST",....within the context of how WE would use the word.
I would define the word as...
"Anyone who recognizes and accepts the challenge that the game of checkers presents to the human intellect"
I ask this because I, myself, have described myself to some of my friends as a "Checkerist",.....and they never heard of such a thing.
I then decided to Google the word, and the results were not to my liking....
I am hoping that we can, together, properly define the word.....
Any help, and/or opinions would be greatly appreciated...!!!
Regards
Jay H

Checkerist ?
Hello Jay:
I wonder what Wm. F. Ryan's intended meaning was for his AMERICAN CHECKERIST ? Till now I never really thought about what it meant !
Perhaps the term 'checkerist' might encompass one who loves the game in many ways; player, collector of checker books, etc. , a some what unique individual that is either male or female who enjoys one of the finest mind sports ever devised to be played over the checkered board.

And, if I had my way....
This definition would be included in the Webster Handy College American Dictionary (the only one I currently own) along with a picture of Alex Moiseyev along side of it ....as he is( as far as I interpret the word), a Checkerist....!!!!

AGREED...."loves the game"...!!!!
I have seen the lists of greatest players ever, many have been produced over the years,.....
"Checkerist":.....
Historicaly, Great "Checkerists" do not have to be great checkers "players", IMHO, but, as I defined it...."recognizing and ACCEPTING the CHALLENGE that the game presents.....
Think about the Manson Teetzles, the Charles Walkers, the Earl Hangens, the men who were never the best players, but who RECOGNIZED, AND ACCEPTED challenge that the game presented.....
These particular choices are examples of men who gave back to the game, but that does mean that one would have to give back as much as these men did to be a "Checkerist"...at least in my book...
Again, any opinions and/or comments appreciated...
Regards

Re: Definition: What is a Checkerist
I just realized I may heve been insensitive to the rest of the "Checker " playing world....
How about a definition for "Checkerist/Draughtsman"...
Or "Draughtsperson"......just so not to offend the ladies....

Politically correct in Checkers/Draughts ?
I had always hoped to keep any type of political correctness out of the game
As 'Checkerists' I feel we all should look at each other equally regardless of gender, etc. as we all share a common love for a beautiful game. I look at all players regardless of sex, religion, color ,as my equal in every way and at the board we are on level ground (well till the game begins) and then skill takes over as who is the better player.
Being politically correct has spoiled many things in my opinion as everyone is getting afraid to make any type of remark for fear of offending someone.
So to be a 'Checkerist' you treat everyone as the same and without any kind of distinction (aside from ratings and titles ).
Checkers and Draughts are interchangable words for the same thing depending on what part of the globe you reside.
