Alan,

Above I wrote"
Were the posts made by Josh under his other names lost when his extra names were removed?
I did a little searching and see that all the the posts made by Jolt., Jolt.., whoever the poster was (I guess it wasn't Josh Armstrong) are missing from Alex's topic "SIXTH corrections - 10 in 8 months" viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1058&st=0&sk=t&sd=a ... ions+sixth it's seems to me that whoever Jolt is or was, he put a lot of work into finding those mistakes in Alex's book and now they are gone. I hope Alex saved them and I feel sure he did, but for the rest of us they are now lost.

Reminds me of those time-travel movies and TV shows ("The Time Machine" and "Back to the Future", etc.) you know what I mean, things always seems to get messed up when someone start changing things, it's a tricky business and we have to be extra careful when we take on such a job.

Don't feel bad Alan. This has happened for years, where governments are overthrown because they aren't getting the job done. New young officials step up. Though this is checkers, the fact is that this game is declining and I haven't see much progress. We still hold Nationals in Vegas, and the real checker enthusiasts are sadly passing away. I think younger players just feel a new approach would be worth a shot. Whatever we're doing now is just not working.

O and Pal, here are your errors (Next time the Administrator should think twice before removing a person and all his posts, there might have been something contributed to the checker community):

1.)Pg 28, after diagram 26
1-6 [...] 17-13, 18-23[19-23]

2.)Pg 176, Fourth line from top.
"I have never [...] the main unofficial low[law]

3.) Pg 73, Annotation E, 2nd Line

4.) Pg 96, Annotation K, 2nd Line
17-21, 2-7, [...] 11-16, 24-2, (not 25-29) [(not 29-25)]

5.) Pg 107, 5th line from top, 1 line above "Draw" line, toward end

11.)Line 3 10-14 [...] 32-27 7-10 22-17[21-17]

12.) Page 150, in the table with all the moves, I believe you're missing the annotation letter "L" after the last move of 6-10.

13.)Page 161, Annotation J
"After this trade, red's[white's] position is very weak; however my opponent played it brilliantly and was rewarded with a beautiful draw."

14.)18-15 9-6L 15-19M 24-15 11-18 20-11 8-15(N)
Now if I follow correctly, I think 8-15 should not have any letter after it.
15.)7-11 O should be 7-11 N since 7-11 loses for white..which the annotation states.
16.)the last move 15-19P should not have the letter P after it..since there is no annotation for it..it should read 15-19O..an instructive game.

17.) Page 193, Annotation B.
"29-25[25-22] is another powerful attack"

18.)Pg 194, Annotation H
"Incorrect, allowing red to push white man on 14[17] around."

19.)Pg 195, Annotation I
"White can also try 29-25 here, setting a "one-second trap" with 6-9? 23-19![26-22!]"

20.)Pg 198
Possibly missing the annotation letter "L" in the table after the last move.

21.) Pg 214, annotation M
Loses as played in the game. However, 25-22 6-10* also seems to be troublesome for red[white].

22.)Page 245, Annotation I, 2nd line of the Mr. Fortman Quote
"4-11 [...] then crowing[crowning]"

23.)Pg 252, Annotation G, 4th Line

24.)Page 253, Annotation E, 4th line
5-9 17-13 1-6[1-5]

25.)Page 257, Annotation M
15-19 [...] 11-7* 2-11[3-10]

26.)Page 283, Annotation C, First Line
Or 5-9 [...] 9-18 23-14 17-10[10-17]

27.)Page 287, Annotation L
Indeed [...] This misses a win after 11-15[14-17]

28.)Page 326, 3rd game down, R. King vs McCarthy, first line
10-14, 23-19, 6-10[6-9]

29.)Pg 327, Move table Chart
Missing the L annotation at the end of the table.

30.)Pg 339, Game B, B1
12-16 12-19[19-12]

31.)Pg 339, Game E, First Line
11-15 [...] 10-14 22-17 4-8 17-10 26-22[6-22]

Hello Pal and Jay:

Thanks Jay for re-posting the corrections:-) You are right Pal that posts need to be archived as much as possible. Jay is right that organized Checkers is on a serious decline. The ACF will have another election approaching and if anyone has a better plan for attracting sponsors, increasing memberhsip, etc. please state your platform on this forum. The reason we are back in Vegas is because we had no other bids . Also remember the ACF is made up of volunteers who have 'day jobs' as well.

No, I didn't ! We all lost them. I don't think I would ever go through this again. I still have good corrections to contest from Jim Loy, Richard Fortman and Al Lyman in my email box. They are still not processed. Jolt did a giant work and it was my fault for not saving them. I thought it is secured and I have a time to put everything together

Good thing to know. Maybe this would motivate all of us to be more cautious and respectable to other forum members and do not force people to leave ?

Sincerely,

Alan,

I have a question for you. I am the one who first brought up the subject of a "code of conduct for ACF members", you sent my post to "Broken Boards" which is for "discussion about all things non-checkers" yet this thread remains in "General Discussion", why is that, and doesn't my topic have just as much to do with checkers as yours? How is it that you feel my subject is different than yours? I guess you felt it had nothing to do with checkers?

I wrote:
It's a black eye on the ACF to have a shameful few of its members publicly harassing, both ethnically and sexually a lady checker player. I had the idea that one of the purposes of the ACF was to encourage and support ladies playing our game. I guess we have a few that haven't gotten the message!

I believe to a degree some of the remarks made at Irma’s expense can be credited to youthful indiscretions and some day these young players will see the error of their ways, but there is no excuse for fully grown men to have treated Irma with such disrespect!

I believe the ACF needs a moral code of conduct and that all members be required to adhere to it!

I was always taught that women are to be honored and that I should show respect towards them, are there any gentlemen among us? I’d like to hear what some of you other men have to says about this.

Oh-h-h ! You are a MAN !!! I don't know yet - it will be a 2nd edition of Sixth, or just "Supplementary Play" in 2nd volume ... In any case Jolt and Jay will be credited along with all other people who made corrections to contest and gramma.

You made me a Day with your post    Please, don't leave the forum !

Hello Alan,

It seems that everyone recognizes the decline and sees its manifestation in things like only a Las Vegas bid being offered, aging membership, etc. But very few suggestions for actual improvement come forth, because it is a tough nut to crack...always easier to recognize a problem than to realize its solution, for anyone.

Would it be desirable to add a new discussion board specifically aimed at brainstorming ideas on how to improve the ACF and better the overall state of checkers? Perhaps out of such discussion a platform could be developed, presented, honed and eventually implemented that would make a big difference down the road. And some of these bright youngsters, if their creative energy can be constructively focused, might make significant contributions.

Only a suggestion. :)

I have a few suggestions, think carefully before making critical comments:

1.) Discard National Tournament at Las Vegas
-Doesn't ACF have any money saved up? Can't the organization put down 5000 dollars and hold it in a new place, such as a city like Chicago or New York. I'm pretty sure ACF must have at least a six figure bank account?

2.) Venue change
- Is it just me, or are tournaments held at the same place from year to year. There should be a rotation of venues within a state. Of course the question comes as to who will organize it, but this is something that should be looked at.

3.) Make the game more contemporary
- I propose a new and fresh tournament concept. Like Beer Checker Nationals, with a huge prize. I'm sure for a high fee, people will come all around to play checkers, drink beer and hopefully win a huge prize. Maybe ACF might actually find a sponsor in Budweiser. People love a few things, Alcohol, Money, and maybe have some female models there.

For like a 15,000 dollar prize, people from all over the country will come to play Beer Checkers, Great Publicity, get some more people interested in the game, and like I said, you should be able to actually find a sponsor, one of those beer companies.

I think the problem is not thinking outside the box. ACF needs to risk some money to promote this game. Are tournaments ever promoted anywhere else besides a few sites? This problem goes beyond aging members. As Barack Obama says, it's time for change.
It has come to my attention that my username has been used by others; they have abused it and besmirched my name. I apologize to all of those who view me in a negative light because of posts that may have been offensive or vacuous.

Jay,

Brainstorming is all about throwing ideas into the mix, no matter how outlandish they might appear at first sight, without being criticized. Thinking outside the box is critically important, as you say. I believe your ideas have merit, and this is exactly the kind of discussion that is needed. Nothing will be easy to implement, and risks must be taken. But I don't see why brilliant checkers players can't come up with a way...it's just a checkers game on a bigger scale. I'm certain there are some other good ideas out there among the faithful. As I said earlier, I'd love to see a Discussion Board dedicated to this topic.

Greg

I must have violated the "Code of Conduct" already. I joined up with the ACF at the last Southern tourney. So far, no bulletin, no howdy, no "get lost", nothing.
So in the spirit of the "Mickey Mouse" ACF, here is a suggestion to for the "Code of Conduct". Make everyone wear a nice shirt and tie along with a sport jacket at the national in Las Vegas. Because it is warm, shorts and tennis shoes should be allowed with pre-approval. Ugly legs need not apply.

Could I get kicked outa the ACF for violations of the "CODE"? Oh well, I never wanted to be a Boy Scout anyhow !!

I quite agree Alan and we are all doing or best but sometimes the reality is a million miles away from the "virtual".As you rightly state their is an election coming up soon.........whoevers hats are in the ring ,the day to day running of such an org. as ACF,(which isnt "virtual")may be something a culture shock to those who cry wolf the loudest!!(and try to hold down a job and put bread on the table at the same time)?

That is true Tommy and there ought first of all to be some appreciation for what IS done. There is a baby in this bathwater....hard work from a lot of dedicated members and officers of the ACF. Constructive criticism is one thing....rash comments and bashing are another and in no way lead to improvement. I also agree that real names ought to be used on the Forum. We are all real people in a professional organization, not a 'virtual' organization but a real one....and the only value of anonymity on the Forum, as far as I can see, is to avoid responsibility & consequences for shady behavior. Some of our youth don't appreciate rules or oversight. It cramps their style. But checkers ought to teach them that success requires order, deliberation and a systematic strategy...and that bad moves always come home to roost.
