Yes, db7 is for positions with 7 pieces and db8 is for positions with 8 pieces.

Here is a paste of some related information about the Chinook database from the kingsrow web page:

If you want to do searches with the 8-piece database then you have to download all the db files. If you only want to use the 7-piece database then you need to get the db6 files and the db7 files. You only need the db6 zip file for the 6-piece database.

i'm confuse am i suppose to get all the files, which is around 20 files to complete the 8 piece databse or what?

ok, i got all the files downloaded so that means that i have all the 6, 7, and 8 database right?
