You might find it interesting to know that after several attempts to rewrite the operating system from scratch, Microsoft's management core is beginning to believe that a "level of complexity" has arisen that has been "vastly underappreciated" previously.
In other words: there is a remote chance that the level of detail needed to accomplish this task while keeping some backwards compatability might be theoretically impossible, or nearly so.
There is a solution that would require every software vendor on the planet to create new versions of their products (and therefore invest time, manpower, and dollars) but Microsoft is trying to avoid this. The prevailing thinking at the present time is that a worldwide rebuke would occur, and the monies spent to produce the new software would not be recovered for a very, very long time.
It will be interesting to see what happens.
Any bets the first release will be bug free? Anyone?
