What do you like about checkers?: .....

Germany 2008

Post by Alex_Moiseyev »

Congratulations to Igor Martynov, former USSR immigrant - new Germany 2008 Draughts Champion who earned a rights to represent Germany in the Mind Games in Beijing in October. I had assisted to Igor a little bit in his preparations, but mostly there were just common advices and recommendations on my part, and Igor did his part of work brilliantly !

I don't know who will be the 2nd Germany delegate in China. Maybe Ingo help us with information.

Respectfully,

Yes, Igor did play very well and won the first German 3-move checkers championships that were held this friday /saturday.
I just came home from Korbach, where I acted as organizer and referee, and saw a very good player winning the title in confident fashion.
My proposal for the World Mind Sport Games nominations for the checkers tournaments were unianimously accepted by the German officials and so former German Champion Dennis Pawlek, now residing in Bangkok, who could not attend the tournament due to working commitments and Igor Martynov of Duesseldorf, former multipled times Latvian shaski champion who gave up playing any form of draughts 15 years ago when he settled down in Germany, and who in the meantime became German, and now made a strong come back with your coaching, were selected to represent Germany in Bejing.

Igor told me that he still remembers you and the times when you played in shashki events in the former Soviet Union and told me to sent his greetinx to you.
It was amazing to see how well Igor played despite his 15 year absent from draughts.
Maybe it was his time to win, as he told me he would have considered giving it up again if he did not play well in this event!

Also the 16 year old Maximilian Frese and my pupil "TJ" Thomas Juergens and the local draughts club chairman Jan Zioltkowski and Konstantin Eljanov who played very well after surving a stroke at the Brazilian Draughts World Championship in Israel last year, played all very well, as did the old and new German Ladies Champion Irene Paetzold, who also became the first 3-move Ladies Champion of Germany.

This event produced a worthy winner and gave a very good impression how well the German Open (GAYP) on August 23th and 24th will be.
Igor told me he was considering to take a bike trip to Korbach for it (he loves duing bike tours!), as it is a most beautiful city in a famous German hills district, reknown for its landscape.
It was also known as the "golden heart of Germany", as it is was the center of the german gold mining industry in the last centuries. (You can still try to find nuggets!)

Igor, who shared my room at Korbach, also asked for a few books, now that he has to focus on his preparation, and the very first one he took from my library was "The Sixth"!

Greetinx from Germany,

Ingo Zachos
