The Scottish Draughts Champion's Cup
I am pleased to inform whoever may be interested that the "missing" Scottish Cup has turned up as I was always sure it would. It was found in a rear of a rarely used cupboard in Colin Young's house. Cup is in pristine condition and is soon to be updated. Regards all, Bernard Coll, Vice President ot the SDA.
Re: The Scottish Draughts Champion's Cup
Well thanks for that piece of interesting information !!
It is just a pity that a trophy of such historical importance was so sadly forgotten , as I said before the 'greats ' of the game have their names on this cup and deserve to be " present " at each Scottish championship award ceremony ,to be remembered and idolised .
As the actual Scottish champion I would like to officially ask the SDA if they intend to send the trophy to it's rightful ( temporary ) owner , or are they going to just throw it back in a dust closet?
If they decide to take the only correct decision , then I will gladly send on my postal address. Otherwise I can have someone come next week to pick it up , I can thus ensure myself that my name and the recent winners names are engraved on this trophy.
One last question ,, does anyone know if the 2009 Scottish championship was included in the WCDF ratings considerations ?
Once again , many thanks

Re: The Scottish Draughts Champion's Cup
Thank you William for responding. I sincerely apologise on behalf of the SDA that the Scottish Cup was not there for you, the worthy winner of theScottish Champion's trophy to receive on the day. And again CONGRATULATIONS to you. But unfortunately it was not. William, if my memory is correct, I told you that I had not been involved in draughts at any level for approximately 12 years. The last time that we had actually met when you were still in your youth was in Kingscourt in Co Cavan in Ireland in 1982, while you were being tutored by the never be forgotten GREAT John Mc Gill. I have known John a good number of years and his humility never ceases to remind me of the real issues of life. ( Being born healthy and being physically able to earn one's living). Let me remind you that John was instrumental in opening the gate of grandmaster status to both you and Tom Watson! John's record in the 1973 match against USA in Bournemouth wholly sponsored by the ever charismatic Tom Landry speaks for itself! Let us not forget William, those people stood where you may never will. William, to conclude, as far as am aware , Tom Watson became so accustomed to winning the Scottish Cup albeit due to the unfortunate deaths of the Irish grandmaster, Pat Mcarthy, and Bill Edwards of Wales, that ownership, temporary or otherwise was not important to him. In my opinion , Tom (Watson) seemed to be more than happy after 5 consecutive bi-annual retentions, was simpler to leave cup with the guardians of a now fragile SDA. The Young Family.

I would like to see a picture of the Scottish Draughts Champion's Cup, and perhaps we can post a photo of it on online Museum of Checkers History.

J R, Your wish to see the Scottish cup in digital form will be granted within the next few weeks. As we all know, this cup bears the names of the most formidable Draughts/checker players' throughout the freestyle, 2-move and 3-move eras within these islands are engraved. It is a very much valued national treasure, alongside the coveted British Champions' Shield.
Re: The Scottish Draughts Champion's Cup
Yes good idea John, the national treasure in one hand and a BIG dummy tit in the other, just in case Billy breaks down.
PS..........thats a soother to some people (wats it called Stateside i wonder?)

Re: The Scottish Draughts Champion's Cup
Hi JR, Not quite sure what you mean by "See" the Scottish Cup. The cup is currently in Scotland under guardianship of SDA. The likelihood of it ever being allowed overseas for display is indeed very remote. As I said arrangements will be made to photograph and send pictures will be carried out in the near future. Regards all.
Re: The Scottish Draughts Champion's Cup
a photo if fine, maybe a close up of champion inscriptions and shot of cup itself. It would be nice to see the actually cup like the dead sea scrolls, but that would be too expensive to setup a touring exhibit. maybe someday I will visit Scotland.

Well, this certainly should be doable; I hope so because I would like to see this famous cup also.JR Smith wrote:a photo if fine, maybe a close up of champion inscriptions and shot of cup itself.

Thanks JR and Jaguar for your interest. I know we are living the digital age, but some of us are scattered throughout these islands. It will take a couple of weeks to organise snapshots of cup, but I can assure you it will be done. Regards.

Completely understand. Absolutely no hurry; eventually, though, I (we) would really like to be able to view the cup and (speaking only, you understand, for myself...) perhaps raise a glass while viewing it; that only seems right.
