Larry Evans R.I.P

Post by Pedro Saavedra »

International Chess Grandmaster Larry Evans died. He co-authored with Tom Wiswell a book on chess and checkers and was Fischer's second on the road to the summit (but not in Iceland). I played him in a simul about 48-49 years ago (I lost).

Given his co-authorship, and his having played at the New York Chess and Checkers Club he may have been a decent checkers player, but I do not know. Does anybody?

What do you like about checkers?: Its minimalist beauty and economy of force.

Larry Evans was, as I'm sure everyone knows, for years a columnist for Chess Life but he said (with some slight bitterness) that because of computers, questions on position analysis were no longer submitted to him... .

I don't know how good a checkers player he was (probably good because he was apparently interested in the game) but there are pictures of him and Tom Wiswell together at various checkers events in several of Tom Wiswell's books.

It's a little depressing...pretty soon there won't be any of the old guard left.

Gloom. Ah, well, the sun also rises.
