The OCL library ( http://www.checkersusa.com/books/ ) just had its 100,000 visit, but Straight Checkers players are few and in between, and they never ever say a word there.

Jake, congratulations on the 100,000 milestone for the OCL. It is great to go back in time, even to 1756 with William Payne's first checker book in English.
The books span many decades, from Payne to Pask! The magazine collections are superb! Thanx for the OCL, the place to go to discover the
world history and the great grandmasters of checkers!

its currently at 167,000. Unfortunately my efforts to engage players into conversations there miserably failed, most would not even sign the Guestbook.

The visitor count is over 185,000 now.
I still find a book/two on straight checkers on my own, the great flow of anticipated books from England, Ireland and Scotland never materialized.
Incidentally, I tried to send some books via the post office, they asked more for shipping than the books worth, I just declined, one thing to share your property but to pay for that too seems unfair. Sharing virtually seems more and more as best idea

Turned out that Ryan's "Tricks, Traps & Shots of the checkerboard" had many missing pages, they fell out of the book. I found most and reposted. Can someone send me pages 35,36,57,58,87,88,109 and 110?

There was a question on Facebook about Andrew Anderson, the first world champion, I tried to provide as much info as I could but never got any interest, so I am moving it here.
This was my post on Anderson http://checkersusa.com/books/straight/A ... s_1852.htm
And this was the animated games from one of the books http://checkersusa.com/books/straight/a ... rson-1.htm

Jake, the Chris Reekie article is the best intro to the great Andrew Anderson that I have seen. You can't go wrong with that! I have not seen the 1848 games before, and it is interesting that Anderson starts with the Single Corner opening 11-15, 22-18 (so named by Anderson himself) extended to 1. 11-15 22-18, 2. 15x22 25x18, 3. 08-11 29-25, 4. 04-08 25-22. That is how Payne's first three games started in his 1756 book. William Hay and John Drummond also used these opening moves (see Little's Hay and Drummond's Jenny Hay opening). Anderson and James Sinclair developed the famous Glasgow opening of 1. 11-15 23-19, 2. 08-11 22-17, 3. 11-16. Andrew Anderson was the first great rival of the legendary James Wyllie, with Robert Martins being the second of Wyllie's great rivals.

Please will anyone be having the books by Boland scanned or can have them scanned?
I see only the Famous positions available at the Online Checkers Library.

Fortman's Basic Checkers

Post by tgf »

Many years ago I visited Gerry Lopez in his house in Temecula, California where he passed to me several old books, including the classic Fortman's Basic Checkers. The book had 7 parts rebound into a single book. The book was very rare and I thought what would happen to it if I die? Who would know not to throw it out? That is basically how the online library started, I wanted to preserve and pass the book to other people. One problem was that the binding was too restrictive and I could not open the pages wide enough to scan. After a lengthly debate I decided to sacrifice the book and cut the pages out to scan. Shortly after, I told all this to Jim Loy who surprised me with the news that they were reprinting the book! Obviously I did not want to undermine their effort by making the book available free, so I removed it from the library.
Last year I offered the book on internet, someone living close by, got interested despite the book condition (loose pages), I offered to bring the book out so he would not need to find parking, but at the last moment he canceled. Pass forward to the Lapin-Barnett match in Miami where I met his girlfriend Tanya, an aspiring straight checkers player. Vadim teaches not just her but also other kids. So I packed my copy of Basic Checkers, together with a whole bunch of other books, and sent them to their new owners.
