2017 Canadian Championship Match

Lorne Wells, Ken Shoesmith and I are excited to announce that a contract has been signed for a 2017 Canadian Championship Match to be played from Monday June 12th to Friday June 16th at my house in Kitchener, Ontario. The match will consist of 26 games, 4 Monday, 6 each on Tuesday to Thursday, and 4 Friday with tie-breaker games to be played Friday if necessary. Ken Shoesmith from Hamilton, Ontario has graciously offered to act as referee for the match. Ken has acted as referee for previous Canadian matches, so we are in good hands.

As many of you likely know, the Canadian Match Champion title has been vacant since Earl Morrison passed away a number of years ago. Before his passing, Earl sent the Frederick J. Vacher Memorial Trophy to Ken who will present it to the winner of this match.

The match prize fund will be split 60/40 between the winner and runner-up. Both Lorne and I have agreed to put up $500 each to play for. Lorne's travel expenses (from Edmonton, Alberta) are being split 50/50 by the players.

Contributions to the match fund are welcome!

If you contribute $10+ - You will receive a copy of all games
If you contribute $25+ - You will receive a copy of all games annotated by GM Alexander Moiseyev, Lorne and me
If you contribute $50+ - You will receive a match booklet consisting of photos, information on the players and a copy of all games annotated by GM Alexander Moiseyev, Lorne and me

Instead playing 26 3-moves games, you should probably mix styles and play 6 - GAYP games, 8 - 11 man ballot games and 10 - 3 moves games ... or something like this.

That is reminiscent of two matches played by Professor W.R. Fraser in 1952, as chronicled on the OMOCH Time Line and referenced in Fraser's book The Inferno Of Checkers. In Jan-Feb of 1952 W.R. Fraser defended his Canadian Match Championship from J.D. MacFarlane. The match of up to 40 games was divided into four conventions: Freestyle, 2-move, 3-move, and 11-man ballot. Fraser defeated MacFarlane with a score of 11-4-19. Fraser writes, "Further, the winner of the match was to claim not merely the Canadian Match Title, but the World's Title in respect of the combined opening conventions." The second match was an exhibition, as Fraser explains, "No one seemed interested in attempting to raise the standard purse of $1500.00 to cover a World's Title match at the combined conventions between Fraser and any rival anywhere." Fraser's opponent for the exhibition match in Montreal was the new Two-Move World Champion, Marion Tinsley who beat Newell W. Banks in Detroit in June. (Also, in the Canadian Open in Toronto in September, Marion Tinsley was Co-Winner with William Ryan.) The exhibition match was a full 40 games with 10 games in each convention: Freestyle, 2-move, 3-move, and 11-man ballot. (OMOCH lists the month of the exhibition match in "SEPT???") Tinsley won the exhibition match with a score of 14-0-26. Fraser's book surveys the Heaven of Go-as-you-please, the Purgatory of Two-movers, the Hell of Three-movers, and also the Hell of Eleven-men ballot openings. Fraser admonishes, "This is an especially painful part of hell reserved for all who use the 'Eleven-Men Ballot.'" Fraser covers many aspects of checkers, including the pros and cons of 11-man ballot. Fraser concludes, "Only the future can tell if the interesting 'eleven-men ballot' will appeal to checkerists at large."

There was an announcement by Professor Fraser in ECB August 1952 issue in which he stated:
"Marion F. Tinsley is to play me an international exhibition match of forty games at the 'combined opening conventions',
beginning Sept. 3 in Montreal."
In the Sept 1952 issue of ECB he confirms the result and gives a brief account of the match.
So, I think any question marks set against the 'SEPT' date may be removed.
