"The Rules Don't Apply Here"
You and your opponent are playing a fine game of checkers. No jumps have been made on either side of the board. Your opponent reaches your king row, but since no jumps have been made you don't have a games piece to king him with--and only 24 pieces total are allowed. "Checker Trivia question of the Day"? What is the call for this situation? (Cont.)

From the ACF website under the heading Tournament Rules
Rule #11
A king once crowned can move in any direction as the limits of the board permit. A king can jump one or more pieces in any diagonal direction as the limits of the board permit. When a piece is not available for crowning, one must be furnished by the referee.

"with only 24 pieces total allowed"--which is the normal number of checkers found in a checker set.? One would be hard pressed to find a checker set and board that included instructions that stated that "extra checkers" are provided in order to cover the above situation. The ACF rules do not apply outside of their organizational activities because the original rules of the game were laid down many many years before they (the ACF) came into existence.

Several companies checker instructions allowed for this situation in unique ways without adding additional checkers to the game. (Cont.)

This question (not exactly the same situation but close) came up under the General Discussion section of the forum a while back, a player new to the game wanted to know where the extra checker comes from for crowning a king? It might be interesting to read what was said.
