Clapham Checkers/Draughts problems ...book ?

Post by craynerd »

Hello,

I am looking for a book i have been told about now on several occasions, something like Clapham Draughts problems. I have done countless internet searches and can't find anything.

Maybe someone could help me, is Clapham the author or is it in the book title?

i can't find it anywhere, is there anything on the internet with the problems published?

Apparently the book just consists of countless useful draughts puzzles.

I am very interested to find it, so if anyone has a copy, knows where i can get a copy or is willing to photocopy a few "sample" pages, please get in touch.

My reply to Craynerd

Hello Craynerd:

Seems like a lot of my replies has a story connected.......... This will be no exception. In 1966 I began college study in Columbus,Ohio at Franklin University. Along the way I met an older man by the name of B.T. Shafer.
He was my mentor and coach and taught me much about the beauty and depths of Dama. Mr. Shafer loved the study of problems and soon introduced me to 'sight solving' problems he would have set up on his board when I would go over to his New Albany home for a session on Checkers. He had a modest library, but one book he loved was : THE CLAPHAM COMMON DRAUGHTS BOOK ........... " A guide for beginners" by the late G.E. Trott, London.I have the original Mr. Shafer gave me and it brought back fond memories as I dug thru my library to find my copy. The book has 4 problems per page (double sided) and has 57 pages. From this little book one rapidly realizes what a mind sport Checkers/Draughts really is. I also have a reprint of this fine little book.

Craynerd If you will email me with your full name and address I will forward to you my 'extra' at no cost to you. I have been given a few books of late and do my best to keep them circulating in the playing fraternity. There are many others out there reading my post that could do the same thing if you run across an aspiring & deserving player.

Allan,

Many thanks for your kind offer. I am a young player (22) and I posted on here several months ago looking for draughts games in the UK. I have since got in contact with John Reade and joined the Lancashire Draughts League: Division II.

I am currently playing as often as possible, got myself a selection of books including the Lee
